BEST PRACTICE 2

‘Eco Revive’: A Beacon of Hope for a Greener Future

Objective:

  • To educate students about key environmental issues and sustainable practices.
  • To promote habits such as reducing waste and conserving energy.
  • To provide opportunities for students to lead sustainability initiatives

Context

Colleges play a pivotal role in preparing students to tackle global environmental challenges by instilling a sense of responsibility toward sustainable practices. Students engage in local environmental projects, fostering connections with the community and enhancing their practical learning experiences.

The Practice:

1. LED Star Making

The LED Star and Bulb Making Workshop educates students about the principles of electronics and promotes sustainable practices through hands-on activities.

Paddy Cultivation: From Sowing to Harvesting and Sale

Paddy cultivation is vital for food security and offers valuable hands-on learning opportunities for students in agriculture and related fields. Students participate in field studies, learning about soil preparation, sowing techniques, and water management.

3. Plantation of Saplings

The plantation of saplings plays a crucial role in environmental conservation, biodiversity, and climate change mitigation. Students physically plant saplings, gaining practical skills in horticulture and environmental science.

4. Flood Relief Contributions

The National Service Scheme (NSS) plays a crucial role in fostering social responsibility among students. During flood emergencies, NSS volunteers mobilize to provide essential support and relief to affected communities

5. Water Facility for Birds

Providing accessible water sources is essential for the survival of birds. Students create water facilities to support local bird populations and learn about the importance of wildlife conservation.

6. Nature and Wildlife Photography Exhibition

This exhibition raises awareness about biodiversity and environmental conservation through photography, allowing students to express their creativity while highlighting environmental issues.

7. World Bicycle Day

World Bicycle Day is celebrated to promote the use of bicycles as a sustainable mode of transportation, emphasizing their health and environmental benefits.

8. Nadukani Mass Cleaning

The Nadukani Mass Cleaning Drive aimed to enhance cleanliness and promote environmental awareness in the Nadukani area. Students actively participated in the cleaning campaign.

Evidence of Success:

  • Students participated in paddy cultivation on 40 cents of land near Shariyil, yielding 120 kilograms of rice.
  • LED bulbs and stars made by students promote energy-saving habits.
  • NSS volunteers planted a small forest on 5 cents of campus land under the "VIDHYAVANAM" initiative, in collaboration with the Kerala Forest and Wildlife Department.
  • The college raised around 25,000 rupees, which was donated to flood relief camps.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required:

Problems Faced:
  • Limited time for extension activities.
  • Many initiatives require significant financial investment.
  • Engaging all students and faculty in sustainability efforts can be challenging, resulting in lower participation rates.
Resources Required:
  • Grants from government bodies and partnerships with NGOs.
  • Resources to develop or enhance courses in sustainability and environmental science
